I Guess 'Fancy' Has Different Definitions

At the Starbucks on campus I saw some friends waiting for their coffees to be made. I went over to them with my tall regular, plain coffee...

Me: Oh you engineers, forced to wait for your fancy coffees. If you were more simple, like me, you'd be in and out here like 'that'.

Female Engineer and Coffee Aficiando: I just ordered a double caramel iced frappuccio with soy milk. How is that fancy?

You only needed to indicate "engineer" and I knew that they would not understand the concept of "simple".

I used to like to go to Starbucks and just order... coffee. Usually that would throw the barista a bit. That said, their coffee is horrid, so I stopped doing that.

Isn't it funny how quickly our perceptions become distorted - they change in increments until, for example, what would have been "fancy" for us is now "commonplace" and no big deal. ;-)

I always feel obligated to order something fancy at the Starbucks. But not TOO fancy, because I don't want to seem difficult. But not something I could make at home or get from Tim Hortons. But no "special needs" ordering. It's all very anxiety-creating. Now I need to lie down.

Um, that's fancy and they can't even see it! :P

I have been one time to our NEW Starbucks...I was NOT impressed! UGH! So yea. I dont' drink coffee so maybe that was the root of the problem.

Ahhh....it always makes me laugh when people criticize Starbucks Coffee. It's always people with an unrefined palate--not willing to LEARN about coffee. Just like wine, coffee is an art and all different. As a manager I can say I don't care for some of our coffees---but there are wines I don't like too! To generalize all in one lump just isn't fair. Oh, and an "iced soy frappuccino" is impossible to make...
